Meet the artist

Mardella Sunshine Lowry, an artist whose areas are bead and leatherwork, quilting, wood, bone and soapstone carving, and storytelling, was the only Native American among 152 artists accepted for Pennsylvania's Artists in Education program.
 
Mardella was born and raised in Robeson County, NC and is a member of the Lumbee tribe. She moved to Philadelphia, became involved in United American Indians of Delaware Valley, and began her teaching and art career.
 
Mardella has been the featured artist at hundreds of festivals, pow-wows, schools and libraries. Recently she has appeared at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC.
